My dreams for Black healing is the return in part to ritual and our traditions designed to help us navigate this world. The ritual of giving to the earth. The ritual of paying homage to our ancestors. The ritual of dance, drum and sharing stories. Our rituals protect us from hurting ourselves or others. They keep us from hardening, closing, sinking or falling into despair.

Presenter Bio

Yolande Clark-Jackson is a yoga practitioner, nurturer, author and educator with over twenty years of teaching experience. She is the author of the Award-winning author of the children’s book, Rocko’s Big Launch. A book about t a little Blavk boy who wants to become a rocket scientist. She holds an MFA in Creative Nonfiction and hosts creative writing workshops for teens and adults. In her workshops, she guides participants on how to tell their story and find empowerment in discovering their unique voice and perspective.

“Throughout my life I have managed to hold multiple trauma. I suffered with severe eczema which affected my self esteem about my skin. I was uprooted in early adolescence to a predominantly white town, I was othered, I have lost a child to cancer, i have lost a parent, two aunts and a cousin that was just one year older than me. Black people hold so much collective pain and trauma. The PSD we live with in America only compounds the day-to-day personal traumas we hold in our heads, hearts and in our bodies. We often hear and know that ‘We’re so strong.’ Yet, we need to know that we need to be taken care of. We need to share our stories and acknowledge we need healing and community. I want to share how writing and sharing, and breathing can help the healing process. I want to share what I have learned about healing. Healing is a journey, and joy is a decision.”
