For Black Healing, I dream about sustainable joy. I dream of a day when Black people are willing and ABLE to fully take care of our minds, hearts, bodies, and spirits. For Black Liberation, I dream about communalism. I pray for Black people to uphold BLM sentiment within our own communities. The death of classism, sexism, transphobia, homophobia, etc. Our future looks like us deeply connected back to the land. Mother Earth being grateful that we chose to love and honor her. Her extending our time on the planet and us prospering without any occurrence (police brutality, white supremacy, microaggressions, etc.) that knocks us down. I dream of us being freely happy, without the disclaimer of “in spite of…”

Event Description

Explore your mind, body, and spirit as you progress through three of the eight limbs of yoga: pranayama, asana, and dhyana. Pranayama is the “regulation of life force energy” or, more simply stated, breath work. This will be explained and practiced at the beginning of class, giving you new, highly accessible tools to regulate your energy. The majority of class will include an all-level vinyasa flow that will emphasis mindfulness and strength. There will be a two-part, guided visualization meditation that will leave you feeling empowered, grateful, and refreshed. My intention is to keep you deeply attached to your inhales and exhales allowing your breath to move and heal your body.

Who Is This Event For?

This should be for everyone. My queuing should be such that it will even be accessible for the visually impaired.

Otherwise all gender, age, sexuality, etc.

Workshop Goals, Hopes, & Outcomes

  1. Learn a breathing technique that participants can do anywhere and anytime to connect their bodies and regulate their stress response
  2. Create an energy of peace and deep connection to ourselves and each other
  3. Through movement, create some fire (heat) within the body as this promotes change: calories burned and muscles gained and limits pushed
  4. Lastly, the meditation should leave participants with something to work towards, an aspiration or manifestation that they will claim as theirs!

Event Length

1.5 hours

Event Date and Time

Sunday, October 25, 2-3:30 PM PT

Presenter Bio

Born and raised in North Carolina, Dara’s top three values are communication, service, and joy. Dara is a 200-hr level yoga teacher, certified in Connecticut in 2017, and an ACE certified personal trainer as of August 2020. She has been teaching yoga for over a year and has been active in the gym since she was in middle school. She has been working in the health care field for over 5 years and has long term aspirations of becoming a nurse practitioner. She became certified to become a teacher and trainer because she wants to help increase wellness, especially in the Black community. Although she had always been physically well, she could not say the same for her heart and mind. Yoga was a new type of medicine and treatment that gave her a feeling of peace that she had never experienced before. Her work today is an effort to share this peace and goodness with others. She focuses on creating sustainable joy by teaching innovative healing practices to empower her clients and support in their health and wellness journeys.

“People, especially Black people, have been through so much this year (and many years before this one). From a young age, I have always been passionate about doing my part in helping others. I want to be one of the healers for this event to expand my reach and give what I have to offer for those seeking wellness. I believe I am a worthy practitioner who has a lot of love, kindness, and gratitude to share with others. My yoga teaching is also something that I like to give away so that my students feel equipped to return to some of the practice we did together when they are on their own. I would be honored to be a part of this movement as both a challenge to myself as a new independent teacher and as an offering to my people! Besides that, I find great value in being in spaces with other Black healers so that I can collaborate with and learn from them. These spaces generate a lot of energy, and I want to be a part of that in any way or shape.”
